Don Draper in Mad Men does what he wants. He commands and acts on his thoughts and his coworkers follow him. Human beings drive and desire to be relevant, to “matter” has allowed us as a species to evolve and maintain dominance over other living organisms. The ability to create a narrative which signifies “mattering” drives human activity. Storytelling and the ability to persuade others of the validity of your narrative ultimately reveals influence. Grand epics, narratives, and in effect the stories we believe and live control group dynamics. Religion, economic and political dogma illustrate the primary challenges and relative nonsense of group think.
